You Don’t Always Have to Go in Search of Nature…

Because Nature is Right Outside Your Door!

“Anyone can create a welcoming haven for local wildlife. Turning your yard, balcony container garden, schoolyard, work landscape, or roadside greenspace into a Certified Wildlife Habitat® is fun, easy, and can make a lasting difference for wildlife.”
Hi! I’m Erin, and in 2020, during the height of the pandemic, I turned to gardening for solace. Soon after, I decided to turn our yard into a Certified Wildlife Habitat® with the National Wildlife Federation. The hours I’ve spent watching birds, bunnies, butterflies, and bees have been immensely enjoyable. I’ve seen mama birds feed their babies, followed a Monarch butterfly’s life cycle, and watched tadpoles turn into toads. I’ve seen more bird species than I ever thought was possible in my neighborhood, and I’ve discovered the many varieties of pollinators, including Mason bees, which I’d never even heard of before! And I adore watching the explosion of color in my garden as the wildflowers bloom.
These things have brought me much joy personally, but I also believe we must protect the environment. From the National Wildlife Federation:
Rapid and large-scale changes to our lands and waters mean wildlife are losing the habitats they once knew. Every habitat garden is a step toward replenishing resources for wildlife such as bees, butterflies, birds, and amphibians—both locally and along migratory corridors. By adding pollinator-friendly and monarch-friendly plants when you certify, your garden also counts toward the Million Pollinator Garden Challenge.”

I’ve spotted numerous bird species in my little habitat, four different kinds of lizards, cotton-tail rabbits, frogs, toads, and garden snakes. Nature never ceases to amaze me.
If you love wildlife, gardening, bird watching, and supporting the environment, have a look around. I hope to inspire everyone to cultivate a wildlife habitat of their own, whether large or small. Suburban Wild can help.
